Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long does it take for an animal to recover from the
procedure?
A. Spay/neuter surgery is not dangerous or painful. It is much less stressful
than having litter after litter. The surgery is routine, and animals generally
bounce back fairly quickly.
Q. Will my pet’s behavior change after the surgery?
A. Spay/neuter will not alter your pet’s basic personality. It can result in
some behavior changes – for the better! Pets are often less aggressive, more
relaxed, more affectionate, and more focused on you.
Spay/neuter does not make your pet sad because they never
had “children”. Animals reproduce from instinct --not from “human” emotion.
They are more content without those raging hormones and become more bonded to
your family and easier to train.
Q. Isn’t it healthier for my pet to have one litter?
A. Medical evidence indicates just the opposite. Females spayed before their
first heat are typically healthier.
Q. How young can a dog or cat be spayed/neutered?
A. Cats can go into heat and get pregnant as early as five months of age.
Puppies and kittens can be spayed as young as eight weeks if they weigh two
pounds. No pet is too old to be sterilized. Pets over six years of age will
need to have blood work done to make sure they are healthy enough to undergo
anesthesia.
Q. Will my pet become fat?
A. Just like people, pets become overweight when they eat too much and/or
exercise too little. An appropriate diet & sufficient activity will keep
your pet slender & healthy.
