Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project for Cats
Working towards the day there are no more homeless pets!
Operation PETS is committed to saving the lives of innocent animals through prevention. We are privileged to be a Maddie's Pet Rescue Project Partner.
Maddie’s Fund, the Pet Rescue Foundation, is a family foundation established to help fund the creation of a no-kill nation where all healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats are guaranteed a loving home. Dave and Cheryl Duffield created Maddie’s Fund in memory of their beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Maddie (watch Maddie's movie). Maddie passed away in 1997, but thanks to this one little dog, abandoned shelter animals have new opportunities to find loving homes in which they, too, may share in the joy and love that Dave and Cheryl enjoyed with Maddie.
The Maddie’s Pet Rescue Project in Erie County is a monumental endeavor by a coalition of animal welfare agencies working to end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals. The five-year project began on October 1, 2009. By September of 2014, Erie County will be a community where every healthy or treatable dog or cat is guaranteed a home. Coalition members include:
Black Dog, Second Chance
Buffalo Humane
City of Buffalo Animal Shelter
HEART Animal Rescue & Adoption Team
Operation PETS Spay Neuter Clinic of WNY Inc.
Second Chance Sheltering Network
SPCA Serving Erie County (lead agency for project)
Ten Lives Club
Part of the funding that Maddie's Fund has awarded is to assist low income pet owners with the expense of spaying/neutering their cat. The Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project in Erie County is dedicated to ending the cat overpopulation crisis in Erie County. Low-cost spay/neuter surgeries are available to Erie County cat owning residents who meet the program requirements.
The Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project is administered by Operation PETS - The Spay/Neuter Clinic of WNY. Nine private practice veterinary hospitals also participate (list of Spay/Neuter Project partners).
SPAY/NEUTER PROJECT
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
1) Pet owner must be an Erie County resident
2) Pet owner must be a Medicaid recipient
3) Limit six cats per household (not per individual)
4) Cost to pet owner is $10.00 for the spay/neuter surgery (includes rabies and FVRCP (distemper) vaccine). All other procedures or treatments are optional and the pet owner is responsible for payment.
For an additional $10.00 Operation PETS will treat your pet with Revolution, a medicine that kills fleas, prevents heartworm, treats ear mites, roundworms and hookworms (read more about Revolution).
You may want an E-Collar for $10.00. Licking or biting the incision site can cause infection. A collar keeps your pet from licking the incision during the healing process.
You MUST bring the following documentation on the day of your appointment. If you don't have the required documentation you WILL NOT be eligible for the Maddie's Spay/Neuter Project.
- Proof of residence in Erie County (i.e. Driver's License)
- Photo ID (i.e. Driver's License or utility bill)
- New York State Benefit Identification Card
- Proof of Medicaid (approval/re-certification letter with Medicaid number)
- Completed Maddie's Medicaid Surgery Form for each cat (print form here)
